Vet suggested a dental and I am nervous about the anaesthetic

She is nine, otherwise healthy, and they want to do a scale and polish under general. I know her teeth are bad. I also know she is nine and I have read too much. Has anyone been through this with an older cat and come out the other side ok?

Not veterinary advice

Nobody here is your vet, and no vet reviews these posts. Community experience is genuinely useful for working out whether something is worth worrying about - but if your animal is unwell, in pain, or has stopped eating or drinking, call a vet rather than waiting for a reply.

Vet nurse here. Nine is not old for a dental and pre anaesthetic bloods plus monitoring make a big difference. Ask them what monitoring they use and whether she gets fluids during. A practice that answers that happily is a good sign.

Ours had one at eleven. She was groggy for an evening and then noticeably brighter within the week. Bad teeth hurt them constantly and you only see it once it stops.

That's the bit I keep forgetting, that leaving it is also a choice with a cost. Thank you both.

Ask for the estimate in writing too. Extractions can change the number a lot and it's better to know the range before the day.
