Cheapest food that isn't rubbish

Money is tighter than it was last year and the stuff I've been buying is about 70 a month for one medium dog. I'm not chasing the fanciest bag on the shelf, I just don't want to go back to something with three kinds of corn in the top five. What are people actually feeding on a budget that they're happy with? Real answers welcome, including the boring ones.

Buy the biggest bag the brand does and decant it into a tub. Same food, works out about 20 percent cheaper per kilo. That was the single biggest change for us.

Second the big bag thing. Also worth checking the mid range line of a brand you already trust rather than jumping to a cheap brand entirely.

I set a price alert on two foods she likes and buy whichever is down that month. Bit of faff but it adds up.

Decanting is obvious in hindsight and I have never done it. Ordering a tub now.

Careful with switching every month if your dog has a sensitive stomach. Mine cannot cope with it and the vet bills wipe out the saving.

Honestly some of the supermarket own brand ranges have got a lot better. Read the label rather than the price and a few of them hold up fine.

Adding a bit of plain cooked veg as bulk let me drop the portion slightly without him noticing. Vet was fine with it.

Also if you have a local pet shop, ask about damaged bags. Half price and the food inside is fine.

This thread saved me about 25 quid a month. Thanks all.
